The First Congregational Church has a very active Christian Outreach program. We support a wide variety of Outreach activities, both locally and internationally, with the time, treasure, and talents of our members. There are many different ways to participate in this work and to help do God’s work in serving the local community. If you have specific ideas about Outreach opportunities for our church, please speak with a member of the Christian Outreach Committee.

Adopt-a-Family

Help bring the true spirit of the season by providing Christmas gifts for needy local families. Sign-ups are usually held after worship in early November.

Caring Connections

Caring Connections is an additional link to offer support and friendship for one another and to further extend our caring ministry.

As concerns are raised and shared on Sunday mornings and/or at any time for upcoming hospitalizations, illness, loss, or requests for assistance, we hope you will also notify the designated Caring Connection Contact person for the month to better enable us to follow up with calls and cards and especially with the minister to further support and be in touch with each other. If you prefer not to name your concern during church, please let one of us know of your concern or prayer request whether it is for yourself or for someone else.

Sunshine Friends will continue to provide additional support for meals, transportation and immediate short term needs upon request and as able.

If interested in volunteering with us, please email Linda Towle. You may also speak with Reverend Bonnie or any of those listed here at any time for additional information: Verna Hobson, Kim Young, Joan Berg or Cheryl Adrean.

The Church's Wider Mission

Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM) is the international umbrella for the broader UCC mission work. A portion of our Outreach giving is donated every year to OCWM for the church to use across the globe in concert with giving from many other congregations. This support includes disaster relief, economic development, humanitarian assistance, advocacy programs, and other forms of Christian Outreach. By combining our giving with that of other churches we are able to focus our resources and direct them to areas in such a way that we can be sure they are being used to their fullest.

Donate Food and Clothing to Local Pantries

Clothing donations are collected in a box in the main hallway of the church, near the Parlor. The clothes are sold in the church’s resale shop, The Clothes Closet. The Holliston Food Pantry collects food donations at 23 Water Street.

Donations of Food to Local Pantries

The Outreach Committee actively supports local food pantries in Holliston, Medway, and Ashland through financial donations. In addition, we can help members collect and deliver food items to these pantries. Although the traditional image of a food shelter is an urban image, there is a constant and ever-growing need for the work of these food pantries in our suburban settings.

Habitat For Humanity

Our congregation has volunteered on several Habitat for Humanity (HFH) work sites in the local area. HFH builds homes for low-income families who would not normally have the means to afford a home of their own. We have supported local chapters of HFH through financial donations as well as through the time of our members. You don’t need to be a skilled carpenter to help – there is always room for one more person on these trips.

The Metrowest Interfaith Hospitality Network (MIHN)

We are a member of a community of Holliston congregations who have joined the Metrowest Interfaith
Hospitality Network (MIHN) in service to local families with children who are temporarily without a home.
We rotate hosting on a weekly basis with 15 other Metrowest congregations, hosting at Christ the King
Lutheran Church 4 times/year.

We provide our Guest Families with shelter, food, and compassionate support from 5:20 PM - 6:30 AM
Monday – Friday, 5:20 PM - 8:30 AM on Saturdays and 5:20 PM - 7:30 AM on Sundays.

Project Linus

Members of our congregation have volunteered to knit, crochet, quilt and hand-tie "security blankets" for children in area hospitals, and other children suffering abuse, and in need of comfort.

New blankets in any size and pattern up to 40" x 60"  in baby, child, and teen-friendly colors, made of machine washable and dryable materials can be left in the church office.

Salvation Army Dinner

Our church is responsible for providing dinner at the Framingham Salvation Army the third Tuesdays of every month. People from the church shop for the food, prepare the meal, and then help serve the meal. Sign up sheets are posted every month on the Outreach bulletin board in the hallway for adults and youth to volunteer. It is very easy to cook a casserole or help serve the meal for about an hour in Framingham. This work feeds between 80 and 120 people who would go without a dinner if we were not there to help.

UCC Outreach Special Offerings

Through the year, the international United Church of Christ and our local congregation conduct special offerings so as to raise money to support specific work or mission areas or in response to natural disasters. One Great Hour of Sharing is collected in the spring to support the United Church of Christ’s broader mission programs. Money from this offering is used across the globe for a wide array of Outreach activities. Veterans of the Cross is collected during the Christmas season and is used to support the needs of retired clergy and church employees.

Walk For Hunger / Winter Walk

The church participates in several fund-raising walks in the area. Project Bread runs a fabulous Walk in Boston on the first Sunday in May. Proceeds from the Walk go to all the food pantries in Massachusetts. The Winter Walk, held on the 2nd Sunday in March, is a local event that benefits Homestart, an organization that finds permanent and affordable housing for needy families. If you cannot walk, you can participate by sponsoring a walker!
